Testing Construct Validity of Self-As-Carer Inventory and Its Predictors
So Hyang-Sook

Abstract
The aim of this investigation is to test construct validity of Self-As-Carer Inventory (S.C.I.) that was developed by Geden and Taylor(1988) and to identify its predictors. The study samples were 263 non-institutionalized healthy persons living in Kwangju city, Republic of Korea, the range of whose age was from 19 yrs to 68 yrs. The S.C.I. was translated by this author and 2 nursing professors who had lived in U.S.A. for several years and had taken Doctor¡¯s degree in Nursing. The content validity of S.C.I. was tested by 3 nursing professors who were familiar with self care deficit theory of nursing. The index of content validity of all 40 items was 3.0 and more. Out of the 40 items 7 items duplicated were deleted and 34 items were used for principal component analysis and item analysis. The results summarized follows : 1. By means of principal component analysis and varimax rotation, 6 factors, i.e. cognitive aspects of self-care, physical skills, judgment & decision-making process, information-seeking behaviors, perception of self-monitoring, attention to self-management were emerged. The total percent of variance explained by the 6 factors was 45.5%. 2. To assess factor independence and instrument homogeneity, correlations among the 6 factors were computed. The correlations among the factors that ranged from .28~.64 were not too similar or redundant. 3. Cronbach coefficient Alpha for internal consistency of the total scale(S.C.I) was .92 and that of the factors was ranged from .69~.78. 4. There were significant associations between S.C.I score and age, education level, marital status, types of occupation, and monthly income(F=5.75, p=.0001 : F=8.08, p=.0001 : F=3.31, p=.0022 : F=5.05, p=.0006). 5. There were significant associations between C.I score and the amount of their own self-care provided, satisfaction to family members & relatives, the internal health locus of control, health in general, health at this moment, (r=.5660 : r=.4083 : r=.3926 : 4=.3882 : r=.3219). 6. By means of multiple stepwise regression analysis, the amount of their own self-care provided predicted 33.7%(F=127.95, p=.0001) of S.C.I. 5.7%(F=23.66, p=.0001), Internal health locus of control 2.5%(F=10.89, p=.0011), and the widowed, divorced of marital status 1.7%(F=7.42%, p=.0069). The total variance explained by all variables was 44.2% of S.C.I. score.
